I'm curious--is the meter in Yiddish similar to the meter in translation? It struck me as particularly beautiful in these two.

Thank you and thanks for this question! Sorry for my delayed response - it's been a pretty hectic several weeks. In general I try to find a meter in the English that to me has a similar feeling or experience as the meter in Yiddish. Of course that's totally subjective! But in these poems, and I find for Glatstein in general, it's relatively easy for the rhythms of the Yiddish to transfer over into the English, and the rhythms are not as dissimilar as in some of the others.

As a generalization, I'd say that because Yiddish and English are both Germanic languages, it's easier to find similar meters that work in both languages than it might be for moving from other foreign languages into English.
